V Belt Product Overview
Gates is the world’s largest manufacturer of industrial power transmission products. We sell more belts to the industrial market than any other brand.
PROBLEM-SOLVING V BELTS
PowerBand® Belts
Gates invented the “joined” PowerBand concept to solve belt shock-load problems like whip, vibration and turnover. PowerBand belts feature two or more belts “tied” together with a unique cross-cord tie band. Since the belts are physically joined together, they team-up for extra strength, power and durability. Gates PowerBand belts are available in the following constructions:
Hi-Power® II
Predator®
Super HC® & Super HC® Molded Notch belt.
Predator® Belts These classical and narrow profile v belts are designed for extreme shock loads typically found in rigorous industries like wood and lumber processing, mining, agriculture, oil field equipment and heavy construction. Predator belts have aramid tensile cord reinforcement for extreme strength, and feature a treated fabric cover for superior abrasion resistance.
CarryBand® Belts
Gates CarryBand belts transfer cargo and baggage on modular container equipment. These “joined” belts come with gum rubber ribs to move and support the luggage.
Micro-V® Belts
Gates Micro-V belts run smoother and cooler thanks to a molded rib profile that doesn’t stint on power. In fact, Micro-V belts offer 80 percent higher horsepower capacity than RMA standards. The belts are ideal for smaller-diameter pulleys with backside idlers, offering greater flexibility no matter the speed. Micro-V belts are also longer lasting, too, featuring superior resistance to flex fatigue, shock loads, oil and heat.
PowerRated® V Belt Drives
PoweRated® V belts meet the requirements of higher power, clutching, heavy shock loaded and back idler driven lawn and garden equipment. Gates PoweRated® V belts can be used as a substitute for equivalent sizes of Truflex® belts.
Truflex® V Belt Drives
Truflex® gives optimum service on fractional horsepower V belt drives including back idler applications. Truflex® is recommended for applications such as powered cultivators, lawn mowers, electrical household appliances and heating/airconditioning equipment.
Multi-Speed® V Belts
Gates Multi-Speed belts are best for variable-speed drives. They have maximum flexibility due to a special molded-notch design and bandless construction. Flex-bonded cords and greater lateral rigidity mean they can run longer, smoother and cooler under heavier loads than any other similar belt.
Polyflex® JB™ and Polyflex® V Belt Drives
Gates Polyflex belts are designed for high performance at high speeds. Both are ideal for shorter centers, smaller-diameter sheaves and larger ratios. They are precisely manufactured to provide less vibration and run smoother on high-precision applications like machine tools and computer accessories. The belts also resist flex fatigue, heat, abrasion, ozone and other tough environmental conditions. |

Case Studies Carter Holt Harvey Chipper Drive
Four people were required to work six hours every three months in order to maintain a chipper drive running eight SPB 4750 belts. Downtime was costing the company about $7,000 each year with another $2,000 in belt costs annually. By switching to Predator Singles, the company was able to eliminate three belts. Not only are the belts expected to last longer than three months, but it is also anticipated that replacements will not be needed until the 12-month life mark
Green Triangle Forest Products Hogger Drive
A hogger drive running five 5V 850 belts was burning through them every few months. When the belts failed, there was 1-2 hours of downtime to replace and re-tension the drive. After running KEVLAR® reinforced 5VP cross section Predator Singles belts on this application for 20 weeks, there was no noticeable wear. |
|
 |
Carter Holt Harvey Band Saw Drive
Significant improvement has been made on a band saw drive using Predator Singles. Even though the pulleys weren’t replaced, the new Predator Singles exceeded the prior four-month life expectancy with no noticeable signs of wear. For every set of belts that they do not need to replace, the company saves $2,000.

Gates Micro-V® or V-Ribbed Belts
Gates Micro-V® Belts outperform other V-ribbed belts because they are
truncated(shorter). This shorter profile gives the new Micro-V® Belts increased flexibility, reduced heat buildup and allows them to operate at extra high speeds on smaller diameter sheaves.
Specially designed to replace original equipment belts on extra heavy applications such as machine tools, compressors, pumping equipment and other industrial equipment requiring V-ribbed belts.
Two more advantages of the truncated are:
The belt does not bottom in the sheave
The belt can better tolerate debris in the sheave groove. They are extremely smooth running and highly resistant to oil, heat and other adverse conditions.
Specially designed to replace original equipment belts on extra heavy applications such as machine tools, compressors, pumping equipment and other industrial equipment requiring V-ribbed belts.
|
|
 |
Exclusive Gates truncated belt design offers up to 80% higher horsepower capacity than Rubber Manufacturer’s Association standards.
Increased flexibility and reduced heat buildup permit extra high speeds on smaller diameter sheaves.
Highly resistant to oil, heat and other adverse conditions.
Less sensitive to debris in sheave groove.
Meets or exceeds Rubber Manufacturer’s Association standards for static conductivity.
Energy efficient.
Runs cooler than conventional belts.
High power density.
Gates Micro-V® Belt Offers Higher Horsepower, Flexibility
Gates Micro-V® belt features an exclusive truncated rib profile that makes it more flexible than a conventional V-ribbed belt, especially on extra-high speed, small-diameter sheave drives.
Also, the shortened rib profile keeps the multi-ribbed belt from bottoming out in sheaves, helps it tolerate debris in sheave grooves, and reduces heat build-up.
The belt is ideally suited for most multi-shaft, serpentine, backside idler and V-flat drives. Usages range from pumps to precision-center lathes to high-speed machine tools.
Gates Micro-V® belt is available in three cross-sections: J, L and M. All three have a smooth-running construction, strong, low-stretch polyester tensile reinforcement, and static-dissipating undercords. They are available in standard rib configurations and sizes, with lengths from 18 inches to 361 inches depending on the cross-section. Special sizes and constructions are available on request. |

Micro-V Kit for Belt Jump Off
When an “Unfixable” becomes “Fixable”
Once in awhile a design comes along that can test your wits.
Take the Chrysler 3.0L engine found on 1996 - 2000 Voyager, Grand Voyage, Caravan and Grand Caravan mini vans. The serpentine belt can come off the drive when the vehicle is driven into a deep puddle of water or through a snow bank. And when the belt comes off , your customer can be left stranded.
Solutions range from installation of a “snow shield” or adjustment of the front engine mounts to changing the belt, tensioner and idler. Too often the problem
persists leading to come-backs and damage to the technician’s reputation and customer good-will.
A better solution has been developed by Gates engineers. The Micro-V System Solution Kit includes a double sided Micro-V belt, a grooved idler pulley and matching tensioner which includes a grooved pulley. Each of the components are designed to work precisiely with other parts in the system and offer a true solution.
The pulley grooves and belt ribs of Gates System Solution Kit lock together making it virtually impossible for the belt to jump off the drive. Even misalignment problems can be solved. The “unfixable” now becomes “fi xable” thanks to Gates.

PowerBand® Belts

PowerBand belts were developed by Gates for drives subjected to pulsating loads, shock loads or extreme vibrations where single belts could flip over on the pulleys. A high-strength tie band permanently joins two or more belts to provide lateral rigidity. This keeps the belts running in a strait line in the pulley grooves.
PowerBand constructions is offered with Gates Predator® Hi-Power® II, Super HC® and Super HC Molded Notch Belts.
